Article: Safeguarding in Sport
Many children and young people enjoy sporting activities as part
of an active and healthy lifestyle. It is important
that everyone involved in providing and promoting sporting
opportunites ensures that young people are safeguarded during their
participation. All children and young people who take part in
sport have the right for their safety and protection to be assured.
This is the responsibility of every adult and agency working in
sport.
Sport can have a very powerful and positive influence on young
people. It provides opportunities for enjoyment and
achievement as well as developing valuable qualities such as self
esteem, leadership and teamwork. These benefits only apply
if sport is managed by people who place the welfare of all
young people first and adopt practices that support, protect and
empower them.
Barnsley Sport and Active Lifestyles Partnership is committed to
promoting safeguarding in sport and is developing its own dedicated
website
The Child Protection
in Sport Unit (CPSU) provides useful links and
resources to foster a safe experience for young people and
staff and volunteers.
The CPSU is a partnership between the NSPCC, Sport
England, sportscotland, Sport
Northern Ireland and Sport
Wales that works with UK sports councils,
governing bodies and other
organisations to help them reduce the risk of child abuse during
sporting activities.
