Article: Multi-agency training
Multi-agency training is an effective way of bringing together
professionals from different agencies to gain a better
understanding of their roles and responsibilities for safeguarding
and protecting children and young people.
Barnsley Safeguarding Children Board offers an extensive range
of free training courses to individuals and agencies who have a
responsibility for safeguarding children. Courses are facilitated
by the Board's multi-agency training officer with input from a
number of external facilitators, who are commissioned to provide
training on behalf of the Board. We provide both face to face
and e-learning opportunities.
Training Programme 2014 - 15
The current programme of scheduled training courses,
with information about learning outcomes for
each course is set out in the BSCB
training event calendar for 2014 - 15
We also offer a programme of
lunchtime learning opportunities
which comprise a series of lunchtime seminars from 12.30pm to
2.00pm each month from April 2014 until March 2015 covering a
range of safeguarding issues. We would welcome any ideas for
different topics for future seminars.
Training is offered at various levels. Make sure
you access the course that's right for you.
Training Strategy
The current training Strategy and Plan sets out our
vision, values, principles and aims and objectives in
developing and delivering the multi-agency training programme.
2014-15 Training Strategy and Training Plan
The Strategy identifies the
staff groupings in relation to each
course. Safeguarding and learning needs of employees are
identified within six groupings which depend on an
individual's role, level of responsibility and the extent of
their contact with children.
Evaluating the Impact of Multi-agency
Training
We are strongly committed to providing effective value for money
training but we also need to understand where our activities
make a difference both to improvements in practice and more
importantly, to outcomes for children and families. Measuring
the impact of multi-agency training to see what difference it
is making is a challenge, but all our evaluation and impact
measures continually address the following questions in order to
turn feedback into progress and improvement: How much are we
doing? How well are we doing it? Is it making a
difference?
This guide, which includes guidance for managers, has
been developed to help us promote the unique benefits of
multi-agency training in terms of staff development and transfer to
improved practice and outcomes. It details the research
findings around the importance of management support in order that
messages from training are embedded in practice and the evaluation
method we use to measure the impact of Safeguarding Training, and
how it is making a difference to the lives of children and
families.
Shadowing Opportunities
The Safeguarding Board is committed to wider Workforce
Development and staff are encouraged to seek and participate
in opportunities to shadow the work of colleagues in partner
agencies. Children's Social Care offer colleagues in
partner agencies such as health visitors, adult mental health
workers etc. the chance to shadow social workers with a view
to increasing mutual understanding of roles and
responsibilities.
