The majority of children are cared for by their parents or a close relative.
Many families experience problems from time to time and where it is felt appropriate, Barnsley Social Services are here to help them.
If the family has such difficulties that the child or young person cannot live at home either temporarily or permanently, then an alternative must be found.
It is Social Services responsibility to first try to place the child within their own family but where this is not possible we will often seek to place them with a suitable foster carer.
The Fostering Service is part of the Social Services Directorate of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. It is responsible for recruiting, assessing and approving foster carers; and supporting, training and supervising foster carers in the work they do.
Children need the long-term security that family life can offer
Adoption is a way of providing permanent families for children, who cannot, for whatever reason, be brought up by their own parents. Adoption is for life! It is a legal procedure in which all parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters with the adopted child becoming a full member of the new family.
